FJORD
by Skule Eriksen
24’, Norway , 2009
Nærøyfjord is one of the narrowest fjords in western Norway. It is also one of the country’s main tourist attractions, and in 2005 became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This documentary explores and recounts its attraction and atmosphere. The landscape is described with both images and sounds, as the film spans a year and the various seasons. The human presence is absent, as are voices and dialogue. An automobile carcass is the simulacrum for time gone by, when many people lived here, unlike the few today. The sudden arrival of a huge cruise ship seems like a violent intrusion in this precious, natural ecosystem in which calm sounds and rhythms invite us to enter, discretely and without rushing.
