Journey of a Red Fridge
by Lucien Muntean and Nataša Stanković
52', Mini DV, Serbia, 2007
Hari Rai is 17 and lives in a small village in the Nepalese Himalayas. He is a student, but must work to pay for his studies. Although he is very young, he has three years experience as a porter up and down the mountains. Most of the time he carries tourists luggage. Being a porter, one earns little money, yet there is no choice. It is the only available job. Of the more than 60,000 child porters in Nepal, Hari is one of the few fortunate ones to have the possibility to go to school. This time he has the job of bringing a red refrigerator down from the top of the mountain to the city below. Following Hari Rai on his voyage through the fascinating landscapes of the Himalayas, we slowly discover his life, his thoughts, his dreams and hopes, and how much the chance to have an education means to him. Through him, we get closer to the people of Nepal and discover the life styles of this region.
