The Grossglockner glacier is the largest in the Austrian Alps. Up there, nature and civilization coexist in close quarters. Since the spectacular Hochalpenstrasse was built, thousands of tourists go up by car and then walk on the strip of the glacier that retreats each year. Alpine guides, hoteliers, and shepherds all live thanks to this glacier. Their future depends on its survival.
